HOW TO SOLVE USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED ERROR IN WINDOW ?

USB Device Not Recognized

To resolve these issues, follow the steps listed in the methods below in the order listed. If the first method does not fix the problem, procede to the next.

Uninstall and then reconnect the external hard drive

This method resolves issues where the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt.

1. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Search box
2. Click Device Manager from the returned list.
3. Click Disk Drives from the list of hardware
4. Right-click the USB external hard drive with the issue, and click Uninstall.
5. After the hard drive is uninstalled, unplug the USB cable.
6. Wait for 1 minute and then reconnect the USB cable. The driver should automatically load
7. Check for the USB drive in Windows Explorer

Note: Connecting your USB external hard drive into a non-powered USB hub can cause a lack of enough power to operate the external drive. Instead, plug it directly into your computer.

If this method does not resolve your issue, proceed to Method 2.

Install Hotfixes that resolve issues that may exist on Windows 7

This Hotfixes in this method can resolve a known conflict with a USB external hard drive and Windows.

1. Go to KB 976972 You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM.
2. Under Update information, click Download the update package now that corresponds with your version of Windows 7. 
   1. If you're unsure of which version of Windows 7 you are running, click the Start button, right click Computer, then click Properties.
      • If "64-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.
      • If "32-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 32-bit (x86) version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.
3. Click Continue. If a User Account Control permission, click Yes.
4. Click Download, then click Open.
5. The download should start in 30 seconds. If it does not, click Start Download, then click Open.
6. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the download and installation.
7. Go to KB 974476 The computer stops responding when an USB device resumes from the USB Selective Suspend state in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
8. Click View and request hotfix downloads. Click Select hotfix.
9. If prompted, review the license agreement. If you agree to the terms, click I Accept.
10. Check the box next to your version of Windows 7, then enter your email in the boxes below.
11. Enter the word verification, then click Request hotfix.
12. Check your email. You will soon see an email from Microsoft with a download link for the hotfix. Click the link and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the hotfix.
13. Restart your computer.

If your problem still persists, proceed to Method 3.

Install the latest Windows Updates

This method will install the latest device drivers for your USB external hard drive.

1. Click the Start button, type Windows Update in the Search box, then click Windows Update in the results pane.
2. Click Check for Updates. After the scan is complete, click Review optional updates.
3. Click the check box next to the updates, then click Install updates.
4. If prompted, review the license agreement, then click I Accept.
5. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the updates.
6. If prompted, reboot your computer.

If your problem still exits, proceed to Method 4.

Reinstall USB controllers.

This method resolves steps where the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupted.

1. Click Start, then type device manager in the Search box, then click Device Manager.
2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right click a device and click Uninstall. Repeat for each device.
3. Once complete, restart your computer. Your USB controllers will automatically install.

If your problem still exists, proceed to Method 5.

Disable USB selective suspend setting.

This method prevents your USB external drive from powering down.

1. Click the Start button, type power plan in the Search box, then click Choose a power plan.
2. Next to your currently selected plan, click Change Plan Settings.
3. Click Change advanced power settings.
4. Click the box to expand USB Settings, then expand USB selective suspend settings.
5. Click Plugged in, then click the drop down menu and select disabled.
6. If you're using a laptop, click Battery, then click the drop down menu and select disabled.
7. Click Apply, then click OK.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, proceed to Method 6.

Install your motherboard's latest chipset drivers.

This method updates your motherboard's chipset drivers, so your computer will recognize your USB external hard drive.

1. Review your computer's documentation which should contain the name of the motherboard manufacturer.
2. Visit your computer manufacturer's support website. For a list of computer manufacturers' support sites, visit:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/contact-support/computer-manufacturers
3. Navigate their website to find the appropriate drivers for your motherboard. For assistance, contact your computer manufacturer.

Even though Google Chrome is quite a fast browser, oftentimes we have to impatiently wait for a download to complete or a page to load or perhaps for a file to upload. So, it’s wise to keep a few tricks to speed up Google Chrome up your sleeve for those days when your connection is typically slow.

Using more extensions ultimately slows down Google Chrome. When we come across a shiny, new extension, we feel like we would use it every day, but often we forget about it and it runs in the background slowing it down. You can check if such
extensions are using up too much memory by clicking on the wrench menu beside the Address Bar and using the View Background Pages option. If you find any extension that you haven’t been using recently (or will not, in the future) then disable them.

Disable Anti-phishing Filter

While I wouldn’t suggest this to everyone, you can disable the anti-phishing filter of Google Chrome if you have basic knowledge of phishing websites and know how to avoid and stop them from jeopardizing your internet presence. Disabling it is pretty easy:

Go to Wrench icon> Options> Under the hood> Privacy> Uncheck the ‘Enable phishing and malware protection’ option. This will considerably speed up Google Chrome by saving internet bandwidth.

Tweak Around With Configuration Settings

We often leave these settings at default, or get distracted by new features, but optimizing the configuration settings will not only make it clutter-free but also significantly speed up the browser.

Connect with your Gmail account only if you work on different computers and really need to sync bookmarks and extensions.

Things get even more tough if you are trying to download files during peak hours or need to download multiple files in one go.


If you are a frequent user of these file hosting sites, here’s a new app hosted on Microsoft’s CodePlex that might interest you. Called MDownloader, this Windows-only utility will let you download files in the background without you having to wait in the browser for the timer to complete.

You can either copy-paste the file links manually into the downloader window or supply the URL of a web page and the utility will scrap all the possible file links that may be listed on that page. Once the downloads are added to the queue, it will do everything for you in the background – if you exceed the download limit, the utility will wait and re-queue the download.

You are not alone suffer with this problem but the most people run through this, But with some minor tweaks, you can get your sluggish Windows to start much faster.

The logic is fairly simple. Your computer loads quite a few software programs and services during start-up (look at all the icons in your Windows System tray). If you can trim this list, your computer’s boot time will decrease.

Free utility called Soluto and it helped reduce the start-up time of my Windows computer from 3.15 minutes to around 1.25 minutes. All this with a few easy clicks.


After you install Soluto, it show all your start-up programs list into three categories:

No-brainer – remove these programs from start-up with giving a second thought.

Potentially removable – another list of start-up programs that may also be removed provided you know what these programs do.

Required – Certain programs and services are required to run Windows properly and therefore should not be removed.

Depending upon the software app, you may then either choose “Pause” to completely remove that app from the start-up queue or choose “Delay” when you want the app to run automatically but not immediately at start-up. Soluto will launch the “delayed” app once the boot up is over and your system is idle.

You can also hover the mouse over any program name and Soluto will display the number of seconds that the app adds to the start-up time. And don’t bother about making mistakes because Soluto has a useful “Undo all” feature that will restore the start-up list to the original state with a click.

Once you are done classifying your start-up programs list, reboot the computer and you should notice a difference between the start-up time.

The other useful alternative for this you may find more handy is Quisple.

Quisple is a compact Windows utility that lets you play music from YouTube directly on your desktop without even having to launch the browser. Just type the song name in the Quisple player and it will instantly stream the corresponding song from YouTube.

Quisple uses the Google APIs to search for that song on YouTube and automatically plays the first search
result.  It does not convert the YouTube video to an audio file but only hides the video portion during playback.

I really like the simplicity of this app though I wish there were an option to play songs in a loop as well as support for video playlists.

Defragger vs Dfragmenter

Windows already has a built-in disk defragmenter, you can check-out a worthy alternative called Defraggler . It sports a more appealing and informative UI and does some unique things as well.
The Microsoft tool defrags the entire drive and the user rarely has a clue on what’s happening behind the scenes. Defraggler gives you control – you can just defrag the most fragmented files and folders without doing the entire drive. For instance, files like the Outlook PSTs become fragmented often and with Defraggler, you can target them directly for defragmentation.
Defraggler offers another unique feature where you can move all the large files that you don’t use often, like videos, program installers, etc., to the end of the hard drive. The logic is that Windows will then be able to access the frequently used smaller files faster as they’re at the start of the drive.

Contig is another utility from Sysinternals that offers similar features but it runs only from the command line.

Google Translate

You can use the free Google Translate service to instantly translate text from one language to another, you may even LISTEN to the translated text by clicking the speaker icon.

Such feature may come handy in situations when the person on the other side of the phone doesn’t understand your language. You can type the text in your native language, hit translate and play the translated text as audio over the phone.

Will this thing really work?

As part of Demo, these girls decided to call an Indian restaurant and placed the entire order in Hindi using the “text to speech” feature of Google Translate.


They typed their responses in English in the Google Translate box and played the translated Hindi version to the order taker.
